Wynn Bullock, Photographer 2, 1966
by Imogen Cunningham
Light to me is perhaps the most profound truth in the universe. My thinking has been deeply affected by the belief everything is some form of radiant energy.
– Wynn Bullock
Originally from Chicago, IL (and later relocating to Monterey, CA) Wynn Bullock has become one of history’s most beloved and iconic West Coast photographers. Throughout the 1950s, Bullock devoted himself to developing his own vision, establishing deep, direct connections with nature. His inclusion in the historic 1955 Family of Man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, curated by Edward Steichen, solidified Bullock as one of the prominent photographers of our time. As a master photographer, Bullock was one of five founding artists whose archives established the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. His work is also in the permanent collections of over 90 major institutions throughout the world, as well as in numerous publications.
Bullock’s work explores the human relationship with the natural world and his photographs explore the wonder of time and light. His artwork was very much influenced by his interest and independent studies on physics, philosophy, semantics, psychology, and eastern religions. These ideas can be seen through the lens in his abstractions, photograms, gorgeous landscapes which transcend time and space, and nudes in the natural landscape.
